Carl Selby

Photo of CarlAn Apprenticeship gave Carl Selby a taste for achieving work-related qualifications, and now, at just 25, he is the registered manager of a residential care home.

Carl works at The Pines in Bournemouth, a home for adults with learning difficulties. After completing a Level 2 and Advanced Apprenticeship, he went on to achieve an NVQ Level 4 in Care Management.

"I would definitely recommend doing an Apprenticeship," says Carl. "Learning on the job enabled me to gain a wide range of skills such as food hygiene, handling medication, and improving my communication with the residents. As my experience increased and I took on more of a supervisory role I was able to develop things like time management and organisational skills".

Carl's career in care began just over four years ago when his girlfriend at the time worked at The Pines. "I found I got on well with the residents and I liked the atmosphere, so I did some voluntary work there and persuaded them to give me a job" he says.

"I had no previous relevant experience, but was keen to learn. The Apprenticeship provided the perfect vehicle for me to get where I am today."
